Phase Lags and Pulsation Modes of Classical Cepheids

چکیده

The first-order phase lag between light and velocity is calculated from Fourier decompositions of the variations of 12 classical Cepheids. The phase lags have a narrow range, with maximum expansion velocity always retarded with respect to maximum light. The average value of the first-order phase lag is found to be approximately -0.3, close to the theoretical value obtained from the models of Simon and Davis. When the phase lag is plotted against period, two of the stars stand out. These stars are SU Cas and AZ Cen, both suspected overtone pulsators. We further investigate AZ Cen by combining the light curves of three observers and plotting the star on the cP21-period diagram of Simon and Lee. The tentative result is seen to strengthen both the identification of AZ Cen as an overtone pulsator and the possible role of the first-order phase lag as a discriminator of mode. We close with a discussion of our results and of the uncertainties which remain. Subject headings: stars: Cepheids stars: pulsation

Strange Cepheids and Rr Lyrae

Strange modes can occur in radiative classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae models. These are vibrational modes that are trapped near the surface as a result of a ’potential barrier’ caused by the sharp hydrogen partial ionization region. Typically the modal number of the strange mode falls between the 7th and 12th overtone, depending on the astrophysical parameters of the equilibrium stellar models (...

Mean angular diameters, distances, and pulsation modes of the classical Cepheids FF Aquilae and T Vulpeculae

We report the first angular diameter measurements of two classical Cepheids, FF Aql and T Vul, that we obtain using observations with the FLUOR instrument installed at the CHARA interferometric array. We derive average limb-darkened angular diameters of θLD = 0.878 ± 0.013 mas and θLD = 0.629 ± 0.013 mas, respectively, for FF Aql and T Vul. Combining these angular diameters with the HST-FGS tri...

Discovery of the spectroscopic binary nature of the classical Cepheids FN Aql and V1344 Aql

We present the analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data of two classical Cepheids, FN Aquilae and V1344 Aquilae. Based on the joint treatment of the new and earlier radial velocity data, both Galactic Cepheids have been found to be a member in a spectroscopic binary system. To match the phases of the earlier radial velocity data correctly with the new ones, we also determined the temporal...

On the pulsation mode identification of short-period Galactic Cepheids

We present new theoretical Period-Radius (PR) relations for first overtone Galactic Cepheids. Current predictions are based on several sequences of nonlinear, convective pulsation models at solar chemical composition (Y=0.28, Z=0.02) and stellar masses ranging from 3.0 to 5.5 M . The comparison between predicted and empirical radii of four short-period Galactic Cepheids suggests that QZ Nor and...

Calibrating the PFactor in the IR BaadeWesselink Method for Classical and Dwarf Cepheids

The Baade-Wesselink method using VJK photometry was shown by Laney and Stobie (1995) to yield apparently precise results, free of obvious systematics with phase, surface gravity and microturbulence. Here we extend the empirical calibration of the p-factor [1] to a maximal sample of galactic classical Cepheids. HADS or 'dwarf Cepheids' have been shown to follow the same PL relation (at least for...
